Swallowing Suns
if our orbits ever relate,
it is that you would burn away
before i ever met you.
instead we pass only asymptotically,
like the moon and the earth,
and i look through that sharp clear
loneliness to see your face as you go,
knowing i can never reach you as fast
as we are.
she moved into the light like a mote in the sun,
that heavy white light, like starlight breaking
through the clouds on venus,
and through the smoke and dust i saw her
as she turned in the music,
as i transcended to know her entire life
by the way her mouth moved,
the way her profile caught the light,
as she turned to me, smiled gently,
and disappeared into that darkness around.
and how i searched and searched for that
halcyon world she moved me to,
but instead of coming to me she
moved away like the moon into aposelene,
further and further…
til she broke away from me.
if we meet, i’ll know you by the suns
you swallowed to find me, or that
you do not falter as you move to me.
i’ll know you when i see that you carry
all the orbits of the galaxy in your mind.
